What is southern pacific 4460?

Southern Pacific 4460 is a type of steam locomotive that was built in 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is a 4-8-4 type locomotive, also known as a "Northern" in the US railroad industry.

The locomotive was used for both freight and passenger service throughout its operating life. It was retired from service in 1958 and subsequently donated to the city of Sacramento, California, where it was put on display at the California State Railroad Museum.

In 1979, the locomotive was leased to the Union Pacific Railroad for use in excursion service. It was restored to operating condition and operated on several special steam excursions until 1997 when it was taken out of service due to mechanical problems.

Today, Southern Pacific 4460 is again on display at the California State Railroad Museum, where visitors can see the historical locomotive up close and learn about its role in the development of the American West.
